Opti Munich 2026: Where Innovation in Vision Begins with Chemistry

Opti Munich 2026: Where Innovation in Vision Begins with Chemistry

Attending Opti Munich 2026 was, once again, a valuable and rewarding experience for the Vickers team. One thing became immediately clear: the contact lens industry is evolving faster than ever.

From breakthrough lens technologies to sustainability-focused manufacturing, this year’s exhibition showcased an industry driven by innovation, precision, and a shared commitment to improving vision and eye health worldwide. For the Vickers team, the event was not only an opportunity to reconnect with customers and partners, but also a reminder of how important the chemistry behind contact lenses truly is.

As manufacturers of high-purity N-Vinyl-2-Pyrrolidone (NVP) and suppliers of specialist salts used throughout the contact lens industry, we understand that every advancement in lens technology starts with the quality of the raw materials behind it.

The Science Behind Comfortable Vision

When people think about contact lenses, they often think about comfort, clarity, or convenience. What is less visible is the chemistry that makes those experiences possible.

NVP remains one of the key monomers used in the production of soft and silicone hydrogel contact lenses, helping to deliver the moisture retention and hydration properties wearers rely on every day. As lens technologies continue to advance, the demand for exceptionally pure and consistent NVP has never been greater.

At Opti Munich, discussions around next-generation lens materials reinforced just how critical raw material performance is in achieving reliable lens quality, oxygen permeability, and long-term wearer comfort.

Myopia Management: A Growing Focus

One of the strongest themes throughout the exhibition was the increasing global focus on myopia management.

With rising levels of myopia being reported worldwide, particularly among younger populations, manufacturers are continuing to invest heavily in advanced lens technologies designed to support long-term eye health. Across the event, we saw exciting developments in specialist lens designs, enhanced material performance, and innovations aimed at improving patient outcomes.

For companies like Vickers, these developments reinforce the importance of consistency and purity at the very start of the manufacturing process. As clinical demands become more sophisticated, raw materials must perform to equally high standards.

Sustainability Across the Supply Chain

Sustainability was another major conversation throughout Opti Munich 2026.

From recyclable packaging initiatives to more energy-efficient manufacturing processes, the industry is clearly taking meaningful steps toward reducing environmental impact. These conversations are especially relevant for chemical manufacturers, where responsible sourcing, process optimisation, and supply chain efficiency all play an important role.

At Vickers, sustainability is something we continue to actively evaluate across our own operations. Maintaining high-quality standards while supporting more responsible manufacturing practices is an ongoing priority as we work with customers across the global contact lens sector.

Building Long-Term Partnerships

Beyond the technology and innovation, one of the most valuable aspects of Opti Munich was reconnecting with long-standing customers, suppliers, and industry colleagues, while also meeting new exhibitors and businesses from across the optical world. Conversations with material scientists, lens manufacturers, and formulation specialists continue to give us valuable insight into the challenges and opportunities shaping the future of the industry.

These discussions help ensure that the materials we produce, from high-purity NVP to specialist salts, continue to meet the evolving needs of contact lens manufacturers worldwide.

Looking Ahead

Events like Opti Munich remind us that progress depends on collaboration across the entire supply chain - from raw material manufacturers to lens designers and finished product manufacturers.

At Vickers, we are proud to support this industry with reliable, high-quality materials that help enable the next generation of contact lens technologies.

We look forward to continuing these conversations throughout the year, and to returning to Opti Munich again in 2027
